ARTS & CRAFTS

Some of the District's most widely recognised artists include Colin Wheeler, whose signature work includes large oil paintings of Oamaru and the North Otago landscape; Donna Dementé, who is well known for her paintings, wearable arts and large papier-mâché sculptures; renowned Oamaru Stone carver Ian Andersen; Kakanui-based abstract painter Peter Cleverley and Watts Davies, renowned for his watercolours of the historic precinct.

The work of the district's numerous talented artists and craftspeople can be viewed at the Forrester Gallery, the Grainstore Gallery, the North Otago Art Society rooms, Omru Blue Outback Gallery, Gallery Picture Framing, at the former Oamaru Railway Station and Gallery and at various cafés in the town.

The Forrester Gallery, mentioned in the 2007 Lonely Planet Guide, houses a growing number of regionally and nationally significant artworks. It offers a varied exhibition program throughout the year.
